Aaron Schmidt had assembled the components to deliver archival TIFF images from the photos as well as a workflow in Adobe Photoshop to make Web-ready files from those large TIFFs but the library had no tools to put those images online. (6) Schmidt immediately thought of using WordPress an open-source content management application to display the photos. “WordPress was the obvious choice” in part because “it is free (in both senses)” and because it was an open-source application he “figured people had already solved many of the issues I would face. ” (7) The result online now represented each of the homes of the community on its own page-one page per street address-and included all the info the historical society had about the address as well as a form for comments. “Western Springs is an active community and I know that people would have content to add. I knew they’d have more details than we had in the historical society files” explained Schmidt on the importance of the comments… Aaron Schmidt had assembled the components to deliver archival TIFF images from the photos as well as a workflow in Adobe Photoshop to make Web-ready files from those large TIFFs but the library had no tools to put those images online. The legend is utterly fake but seems old and authentic thanks to such New England yarn-spinning staples as a lonely sea captain’s wife a nor’easter and a watery death. (For more on "The Invention of Tradition" check out the excellent 1983 book of that title by Eric Hobsbawm and Terence Ranger. )The agency created a blog (seahag. com) to perpetrate the legend.
